Three Pioneers win NWC wrestling titles

LENOIR — Watauga had three wrestlers take home Northwestern Conference championships at the NWC Tournament held Saturday at Hibriten High.
Mark Townsend, Gus Coffey and Demetreus Kostis all won conference championships for the Pioneers, who finished fifth in the overall standings with 88 points. Kostis kept his undefeated season intact by beating Ryan Oxford of South Caldwell 17-4. Kostis improved to 45-0.
Townsend, wrestling at 113 pounds, beat Foard’s Dillon Cassidy 4-2. Townsend improved his overall record to 39-8.
Coffey, who is 40-6 overall this season, beat Brax Meade of Alexander Central 4-3 in the last 10 seconds of the match.
Watauga’s Jeremy Critcher finished third in the 195-pound weight class. He improved to 23-22 overall. Jake Page was fourth in the 160-pound class. He is now 23-23.
Alexander Central won the overall team championship with 195 ½ points. Foard was second with 189, followed by St. Stephens with 135, Hibriten with 101 ½, Watauga, South Caldwell with 68 and Hickory with 10.
Alexander Central went 6-2 in the finals to overtake Foard. The Cougars were 2-1 in head-to-head matches with Foard in the finals.
The Pioneers will see how many wrestlers will be invited to the regionals later this week. The regional tournament is Feb. 23 at Hough High.
