The Citadel sweeps ASU's baseball team

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Appalachian State's road trip to The Citadel was one for the Mountaineers to forget.

Appalachian State, after overcoming a three-run deficit with a three-run ninth inning, gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth and fell 8-7 at Riley Field Sunday.

Appalachian State trailed 7-4, but got and RBI double from Will Callaway, an RBI double from Hector Crespo and a run on a wild pitch, which allowed Crespo to score.

But the Mountaineers (21-15, 10-10 SoCon) could not keep the Bulldogs from scoring in the bottom of the ninth.

Instead, The Citadel (24-17, 12-6) got a sacrifice fly from Bo Thompson, which scored Hughston Armstrong from third base for the game winner. Armstrong singled, moved to second on a fielder's choice and got to third on a Taylor Thurber wild pitch.

Armstrong was a one-man wrecking crew for The Citadel. He went 5-for-5 from the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. The Bulldogs could have scored more runs, but left 15 runners on base.

Appalachian State moved down to fifth place in what used to be a tightening Southern Conference standings. Western Carolina (26-16, 15-6) took over first place, with Elon (22-20, 14-7) a game back. The Citadel (24-17, 12-6) and College of Charleston (21-18, 12-8) are close behind.

The Mountaineers, who never led, are on a four-game skid dating back to a loss to Campbell on April 17.

The Citadel, with help of a three-run second inning, took a 5-1 lead. Appalachian State scored twice in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Preston Troutman and Crespo to pull to 5-3. The Mountaineers added a run in the eighth on a Dillon Dobson.

Crespo, Callaway and Troutman each had two hits for the Mountaineers.

Jeffrey Springs struck out six Bulldogs, but gave up five earned runs on five hits in 21/3 innings. Josh Wilson fanned four in 3 2/3 of relief, but also gave up an earned run.

Appalachian State has a busy week, beginning Tuesday with a home game against North Carolina A&T. The Mountaineers play at East Tennessee State on Wednesday, and host Samford for a three-game series beginning Friday.
