Strickland finishes sixth in tournament

Appalachian State freshman Zach Strickland took sixth place at 165 pounds in the Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament hosted by Chattanooga at McKenzie Arena.
Appalachian State scored 18.5 points and moved from 22nd to 18th in the 24-team field, filled with some of the nation's best teams.
Strickland finished 5-3, which included matches against four ranked opponents. He opened with a 4-3 win over N.C. State's Nijel Jones, who was ranked ninth overall.
Strickland followed with a win over fifth-seeded Cody Yohn of Minnesota.
With five victories and advancing into the consolation semifinals, Strickland suffered back-to-back setbacks against third-seeded Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State and sixth-seeded Zach Toal of Missouri, putting Strickland in sixth place.
