Stop, Drop and Roll 5K set for Saturday
by Gerrit Van Genderen
All proceeds of the 5K will be divided between the Watauga County Firefighters Association, the North Carolina Firefighter's Burned Children Fund and an educational scholarship to graduating high school students who plan to pursue careers in emergency services, according to race coordinator Miranda Williams.
This is the second consecutive year that the event will take place. The event raised over $2,000 in 2013.
As of Thursday, 61 people had pre-registered for the event. Williams said the coordinators hope to have around 100 people register the day of the event.
Those who registered before or on the day of July 2 paid $20 and those who register the day of will pay $25.
Williams said she expects that the event will have around 20 to 25 volunteers including Watauga County firefighters. Volunteers will be assisting with registration, refreshments, course setup and door prizes.
The 5K course will be completely along the Greenway Trail. It is both a run and walk, whichever is preferred by participants in the event.
"We are just hoping for a great turn out," Williams said. "It is a fun event because it is the Fourth of July weekend as well. Hopefully some out-of-towners participate as well."
