St. Stephens works 2-2 tie with Watauga
by Staff Reports
Watauga’s boys’ soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie with St. Stephens Monday after it looked like the Pioneers would leave Jack Groce Stadium with a victory.
Watauga’s Justin Hall scored a goal in the first overtime to take a 2-1 lead. Logan Raichle set up Alex Parsons, whose shot hit the post.
Hall got the rebound and scored the goal to put the Pioneers (11-1-3, 4-0-2 NWC) in front.
St. Stephens kept pressing and answered with a goal from Luke Bruce off an assist from Nick Bryant, who scored the Indians’ first goal in the first half.
Bryant’s first goal gave the Indians a 1-0 lead. Watauga got a goal from Tucker Chasteen to tie the game 1-1 at the 59th minute. Alex Parsons had the assist on the play.
The two goals Watauga allowed were the first goals scored against the Pioneers since Hickory scored in a 3-1 Watauga victory on Sept. 12. The Pioneers shut out four teams since then until Monday night.
Watauga also has not lost a game since Aug. 27 when it fell to A.C. Reynolds 2-1. The Pioneers are 6-0-3 during that stretch.
St. Stephens is 8-5-2, 3-1-2 in the NWC.
Watauga’s junior varsity also lost 2-0. It was Watauga’s first loss of the season.
