St. Stephens boys' basketball team clips Watauga

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

The last time St. Stephens' boys basketball team visited Watauga's Lentz-Eggers Gym, which was last season, it took the Indians eight overtimes to win the game.

It didn't take any overtimes for the Indians to beat Watauga Tuesday, but their game was still close. St. Stephens claimed a 60-59 victory after Watauga could not convert a final shot at the basket at the buzzer.

Watauga's Jay Harrill hit a jump shot with 22 seconds left to tie the game 59-59, but could not take advantage of a stop of the Indians on the other end. Watauga committed a turnover on an inbounds pass with 7.2 seconds left, and St. Stephens' James McGill converted one of two foul shots when he was fouled driving to the basket.

Watauga inbounded the ball, following a timeout, but the ball was knocked out of bounds with 1.4 seconds left. Watauga's T.J. Poulos inbounded the ball to teammate Matt Lambert, whose shot at the buzzer did not fall.

It was a rare miss for Lambert, who led all scorers with 19 points. Lambert was particularly effective in the first quarter when he scored eight points and helped give the Pioneers an early 15-9 lead.

Watauga was shooting 70 percent from the field (7-of-10) during the first 4:16 of the first quarter, but made just 2-of-7 in the final 3:44.

That allowed St. Stephens to go on an 11-5 run and tie the game 20-20 at the end of the quarter.

Watauga's cold shooting continued into the second quarter when St. Stephens outscored the Pioneers 17-8 and take a 37-28 halftime.

St. Stephens got 15 points from Marcus Conner and 13 points from Caron Corpening. Christian Beasley added 10 points.

Watauga hosts Wilkes Central tonight in the Pioneers' final game before Christmas. The Watauga athletic department will retire the jerseys of former Watauga baseball players Jonathan Greene and Ryder Jones during halftime of the game.
