Sports Network honors ASU's Price, Washignton

by Staff Reports

PHILADELPHIA -- Two Appalachian State football players earn preseason all-America recognition from The Sports Network on Monday.

Sophomore wide receiver Sean Price earned first-team honors while senior Tony Washington was named to the third team as a kick returner.

In just 10 games as a redshirt freshman, Price caught 81 passes for 1,196 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012, breaking the FCS freshman records for receptions (71, set by Cal State Northridge's Drew Amerson in 1999) and receiving yards (1,073, set by Marshall's Randy Moss in 1996). Price's 7.1 receptions and 119.6 yards per game both ranked sixth nationally last season, regardless of class.

The Sports Network honors are the latest in a long list of accolades for Price, who was previously named all-America by the network following the 2012 campaign. He placed third in voting for the Jerry Rice Award (FCS Freshman of the Year) and was one of two runners-up for the College Sporting News Freshman of the Year award.

The 2012 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year was a first-team all-conference selection by the league's coaches and media and earned all-America and freshman all-America honors from the College Sports Journal.

Washington, who once again showed his versatility as both a receiver and return specialist last season, finished the year ranked 11th nationally in kick returns (27.4 yards per return) and tied for 21st in punt returns (9.0 ypr). During the 2012 season, Washington racked up 629 yards on just 23 kickoff returns, including a 99-yard touchdown gallop against Wofford.

Washington also brought back 16 punts for 144 yards and hauled in 39 passes for 474 yards and three touchdowns. He finished second on the squad and 66th nationally in all-purpose yards (1,316/109.7 ypg).
