TALAHASSEE, Fla. -- Appalachian State's softball team closed out its appearance in the Florida State Renegade Classic with a 5-3 loss to Southern Mississippi Sunday.

The Mountaineers fell behind 3-0 before Ashley Seering delivered a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Southern Mississippi added a run in the top of the third inning, but the Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the third when Cynthia Gomez drove in Dani Heichen with a single.

Alissa Schoelkopf (1-4) suffered the loss after pitching the first two innings. Shivaun Landeros pitched the final five innings for the Mountaineers.

Appalachian State slipped to 3-7, while Southern Mississippi improved to 10-14.
