South Carolina outlasts Mountaineers

by Staff Reports

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Appalachian State closed South Carolina's lead to just two points inside the final 20 seconds of the game, but could not overtake the Gamecocks in a 74-69 loss Wednesday at Colonial Life Arena.

The Mountaineers (2-8) pulled to within 71-69 when Jay Canty tipped the ball in the basket with 19 seconds left. Appalachian State trailed 71-64 when Nate Healy drained a 3-point shot, and then the Mountaineers got a stop on the other end of the court.

But after Canty's tip, South Carolina (6-3) got a foul shot from Eric Smith, and then Healy could not convert a 3-point shot on the other end. LaShay Page made two free throws with four seconds left to seal South Carolina's victory.

Canty and Tevin Baskin each scored 16 points for the Mountaineers, who broke a seven-game losing streak Sunday with a win over UMKC. Canty and Healy each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

South Carolina got 16 points from Lakeem Jackson on 8-of-11 shooting. The Gamecocks shot 45.9 percent from the field compared to ASU's 36.5 percent shooting. Appalachian State made up for that by making 19-of-22 foul shots from the line.

Appalachian State fell behind 29-18 in the first half, but rallied and trailed 37-35 by halftime. The Gamecocks rebuilt their lead back to nine points (67-58) on a Kindaugas Kacinas jump shot with 2:33, but Mike Neal, playing in his second game of the season, answered with a 3-pointer.

Appalachian State returns home Dec. 22 to host Presbyterian.
