SoCon baseball tournament set

by Staff Reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Regular-season champion Western Carolina earned the top seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Baseball Championship, which will take place May 22-26 at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. Six of the eight seeds were determined Saturday in a wild finish to the league's regular-season slate.

The top eight teams in the final Southern Conference standings qualified for the tournament, which features two four-team double-elimination brackets producing a single-elimination championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship.

The tournament begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday with No. 4 seed The Citadel taking on No. 5 seed Appalachian State. That game will be followed by No. 1 seed Western Carolina vs. No. 8 seed Samford at 1:30 p.m. and then No. 3 seed Elon vs. No. 6 Furman at 5 p.m. The first day of the tournament will close with No. 2 College of Charleston against No. 7 seed Georgia Southern at 8:30 p.m.

The 29th-ranked Catamounts (38-18, 23-7 SoCon) won 21 of their final 24 games but saw their 16-game league winning streak snapped at Appalachian State (28-22, 13-14 SoCon) on Saturday. The Mountaineers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-8 win, locking up the No. 5 seed.

College of Charleston (31-24, 18-11 SoCon) swept Georgia Southern (25-30, 13-17 SoCon) in the teams' final regular-season series setting up a rematch in the postseason. The Cougars' sweep forced a tie with idle Elon (27-27, 18-11 SoCon), and CofC held the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series with Elon, giving CofC the 2 seed and the Phoenix the 3.

The Citadel (32-24, 18-12 SoCon) saw UNCG score six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to pull off a 7-4 upset, dropping The Citadel a half-game behind CofC and Elon and relegating the Bulldogs to the No. 4 seed.

Furman (31-23, 14-16 SoCon) finished league play last weekend and had to await this week's conference results to learn its seed, while Georgia Southern finished 25-30 and 13-17 in the SoCon to take the 7 seed.

Samford (27-28, 12-17 SoCon) clinched the final spot in the tournament with a doubleheader split against Davidson on Thursday.
