Samford women hold off Mountaineers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team could not overcome a 17-point first-half deficit and fell to Samford 66-64 Monday night.


Appalachian State trailed 33-20 after opening the game down 9-0. The Mountaineers eventually claimed a 62-61 lead on a Courtney Freeman with 1:48 left in the game.


With the game tied 64-64, Samford’s Krista Stricklin drained a basket at the buzzer to give Samford the victory.


Stricklin led the Bulldogs (10-9, 7-3) with 18 points. She helped the Bulldogs take advantage of 27 Appalachian State fouls by making 25-of-32 foul shots, compared to ASU making 16-of-25.


Appalachian State (12-5, 6-3) lost for the second straight game. Two days earlier, the Mountaineers lost at Chattanooga. They host Elon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.


Samford was also able to overcome 27 turnovers. Appalachian State was able to convert those into 31 points.


Appalachian State got 18 points from Maryah Sydnor and 13 points from Freeman. Katie Mallow added 11 points, while Anna Freeman scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.


Appalachian State shot just 29.2 percent from the field in the first half and 39 percent overall. The Mountaineers made just 2-of-13 from the 3-point arc.


Samford shot 47.1 percent in the first half and 45.9 percent for the game. The Bulldogs made 7-of-16 from the 3-point area.


Jazmine Martin scored 13 points and Hannah Dawson added 13 points.


The Mountaineers beat Samford two times last season, but lost to the Bulldogs in the SoCon Tournament finals. Samford has eliminated Appalachian State from the SoCon Tournament the last three seasons.
