GREENSBORO -- The Gate City FC announced Thursday that it has acquired former Watauga standout soccer player Jennings Rex from Major League's Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC. Further details of the deal were not released per Club policy.
Rex, (6-1, 155), was a four-year standout midfielder for the Charlotte 49ers in college. He was named second team TopDrawerSoccer.com freshmen All-American and earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors.
"We continue our commitment to finding top level local players, that call North Carolina their home," said Justin Cox, the club's owner and chairman. "Jennings is a local guy and a proven winner, and I am thrilled that we were able to bring such a high quality player back to Greensboro. Gate City FC fans will see a new level of professional soccer take the field in 2014."
"This is a marquee signing that will add a great deal of quality and experience to our squad" added Gate City FC general manager David Ulmsten. "Our goal is to provide the highest level of quality soccer, while building a winning brand that is the flagship for growing soccer. With this deal, we're excited to have a player of Rex's caliber with our club. He brings experience of having trained and played in the MLS system. His size and agility is imposing at his position and I think he will be a great asset for us."
The Sounders selected Rex in the Supplemental Draft in January, 2014. Rex recently started for the Sounders as they went on to win 1-0 over the Portland Timbers, before coming to Gate City FC.
