Ramirez, Sims earn February honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - For just the second time in Appalachian State women's basketball history, ASU women's basketball standout Sam Ramirez was named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for the month of February announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The player of the month honor is the first for Ramirez in her career and makes her just the second ASU player to win the monthly award since its inception in 2004-05.
Ramirez scored in double figures in all nine contests during the month, as she averaged 17.8 points per game and shot a stout 42 percent from behind the arc. She twice eclipsed the 20-point mark, as she matched a career-high 23 points against Western Carolina on February 8 and then set a new career-high, pouring in 25 points to help lead ASU to a season sweep of College of Charleston.
The Fayetteville native also dished out five plus assists in four different games and tied a season high in rebounds, hauling in eight boards against UNCG. She also drained at least one three-pointer in every game, nailing five threes in two different contests.

Sims was named the Southern Conference February Player of the Month for averaging 22.6 points per game and leading the Mountaineers (22-12) to an 8-2 record for the month. He helped Appalachian lock up the league's North division title and finish the regular season on a four-game winning streak.
He scored 20 or more points in seven contests and drained 48 percent of three-point attempts and 96.3 percent of free throws. He averaged 3.8 rebounds per game and was twice named the SoCon Player of the Week.
He is the first ASU player to win the monthly honor since its inception in 2004-05.

Sims is the first Mountaineer to earn all-district honors from the NABC, which realigned districts following last season. Appalachian's district includes all 12 Southern Conference teams.
