Pioneers' volleyball team drops matches

ENKA — Watauga’s volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday at Enka High School.

West Henderson swept the Pioneers 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 in a match that was played after some of Watauga’s players took SAT exams at Enka in the morning. Channing Hagaman led the Pioneers’ offense with 13 kills, while Meredith Farthing had seven kills. Rebecca Hayes chipped in six kills and three blocks defensively, while libero Ashlyn Van Dyke had nine digs.

Watauga setter Sarah Combs had 20 assists.

The Pioneers’ tough afternoon continued with a 3-0 loss to Enka. Watauga fell 26-24, 25-22, and 25-19. Rebecca Hayes had 12 kills and three blocks, while Hagaman finished with 10 kills and seven digs.

Kiersten McClannon added five kills and five digs, while Van Dyke had eight digs. Setter Kristen Carter dished out 22 assists.

Watauga, which broke a five-match losing streak with a victory over Hickory Oct. 2, host Northwestern Conference rival Alexander Central Tuesday.
