Pioneers sweep North Mecklenburg 3-0

Watauga’s volleyball team opened the state 4-A playoffs with a 3-0 victory over visiting North Mecklenburg Saturday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Pioneers won the first two games 25-19, 25-19. Watauga closed out the match with a 25-13 victory.
Channing Hagaman led the Watauga attack with 15 kills. She also finished with nine digs defensively.
Rebecca Hayes added 10 kills and three blocks defensively. Ashlyn Van Dyke had 18 digs and three serving aces.
Sarah Combs dished out 23 assists and had three aces. Kristen Carter added 13 assists.
The match was delayed for more than an hour when North Mecklenburg’s bus was caught in heavy traffic on U.S. 321.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Meredith Smith reached the state 4-A tournament with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Melissa Blate of A.C. Reynolds in the regionals Friday. Smith opened the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Sarah Yuan of Ardrey Kell.
Smith suffered her first loss in the regional to Hough’s Briana Bodner 6-1, 6-2. Hough’s Gabby Moore beat Smith in the third-place match 6-1, 6-2.
Watauga’s Hannah Peterson lost to Lake Norman’s Megan Mullen 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. The Pioneers’ doubles team of Emily Burwell and Nicole Fox fell to Lake Norman’s Mary Lowery and Isabella Dokell 6-3, 6-2.
Watauga’s team will host Reagan at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the second round of the dual team state tournament. Watauga beat Greensboro Page 6-3 in the first round.
