Pioneers sweep McDowell 3-0

Watauga’s volleyball team cruised to a victory in the first part of its trimatch by beating McDowell 3-0 Saturday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Pioneers rolled to a 25-9, 25-16 and 25-19. The Pioneers lost to Hough, falling 25-22, 25-15, 17-25, 25-15.
Watauga won its first two sets fairly easily, but struggled somewhat to win the third set against McDowell. McDowell took a 17-13 lead, but Watauga, behind the serving of Kierston McClannon, scored the next six points to claim a 19-17 lead.
The Pioneers pulled away, with the help of a service ace from Rebecca Hayes, to go in front 22-18. Kristen Carter finished the Titans off with a service ace on the final point.
Carter, the Pioneers’ setter, handed out 28 assists. Hayes led the Watauga offense with 18 kills, while Channing Hagaman had 10 kills. Ashlyn Van Dyke had three serving aces and nine digs defensively.
Hough took a 2-0 lead on the Pioneers before Watauga won the third set. The Pioneers led 8-4, but fell behind 11-10 before going on a 3-0 run.
Leading 14-13, the Pioneers went on a 9-1 run to grab a 23-14 lead. Hagaman’s kill gave the Pioneers the final point they needed to preserve the victory.
Hagaman had 18 kills, while Hayes added 10. Carter had 36 assists, and Van Dyke had 12 digs.
Watauga plays at Alexander Central on Tuesday.
