Pioneers sweep Ashe in volleyball

WEST JEFFERSON -- Watauga's volleyball team stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over Ashe County Monday night.
The visiting Pioneers (3-0) won in straight sets 25-15, 25-16 and 25-10. The match was the first of three matches in three days. Watauga plays at North Surry on Tuesday before hosting St. Stephens in the Pioneers' first Northwestern Conference game.
Watauga's middle blockers and outside hitters were able to pile up points with plenty of accuracy. Meredith Farthing had 17 kills in just 20 attempts, while Sierra Hill had 13 kills on just 15 attempts.
Becca Hayes added 11 kills on 13 attempts and Sarah Peterson connected on all nine of her kill attempts. Sarah Combs dished out 19 assists and Whitney Dunnigan handed out 17 more.
Watauga took commanding leads in all three of the sets. The Pioneers claimed a 12-5 lead in the first game and a 19-10 lead in the second.
Watauga rolled out to a 9-1 lead in the first game and increased it to 21-5 before Ashe County scored four straight points.
Ashe County hosts Avery on Tuesday and plays at Alleghany on Thursday.
