HUNTERSVILLE — Watauga’s swim teams were able to qualify relay teams for the state meet at the Western Regional meet Saturday.

The Pioneers’ girls’ team finished ninth overall with 77 points. Hough won the meet with 514 points, while Providence was second with 419.

Watauga’s boys’ team was also ninth with 60 points. Hough also won the boys’ meet with 375 points, while South Mecklenburg was second with 368.

Watauga’s 400-freestyle relay team of Forrest Brown, Noah Allain, Brandon Michelsen and Marcus Funston finished eighth with a time of 3:38.99. Watauga’s girls’ team, comprised of Darby Middlebrook, Carson Middlebrook, Julianna Silver and Anne Taylor also finished in eighth place with a time of 3:55.09.

The top eight finishers in the finals of the regionals qualify for the state meet, which is Thursday in Cary.

“A few breaks here and there would have allowed all six relay teams to qualify,” Watauga coach David Gragg said. “It was that close of a meet. I thought we swam extremely well and put up our fastest swims of the entire season. We just competed against some really good teams.”

Watauga had several near misses in qualifying. Watauga’s 200-medley relay team of Doria Kosmala, Carson Middlebrook, Taylor and Darby Middlebrook finished ninth with a time of 2:00.91. The Middlebrooks, Maddy Allain and Taylor also finished ninth in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.10.

Watauga’s boys’ 200-medley relay team of Brown, Josh Herman, Funston and Allain was ninth with a 1:51.53, while the 200-freestyle relay team of Brown, Allain, Michelsen and Funston was ninth with a 1:38.83.
