Pioneers place three on All-NWC boys' tennis team

Watauga placed three tennis players on the All-Northwestern Conference boys' tennis Friday.

Landon Taylor, Dristen Trate and Harrison Battle were all named to the squad. The Pioneers finished second in the NWC standings this season.

League champion Hickory put four players, while Hibriten's Paul Hogan was the Player of the Year. The Coach of the Year is Rom Teague of Hickory.

Watauga's athletics department won another Wells Fargo Conference Cup Saturday.

The Cup, though a points system, determines the top athletic department of each league based on how each program finishes in league standings. Finishing first place in a sport is worth 12 points, while second place is worth 11. Third place is worth 10 points, followed by fourth place with nine, fifth place with eight points, sixth place with seven points and seventh place with six points.

Watauga scored first-place points by finishing first in boys' track, girls' track and boys' tennis.

Watauga finished in first with 193 points. Hickory, which won boys' tennis and boys' golf, was second with 186. Alexander Central, which won the baseball and softball championships, was third with 166 points.
Fred T. Foard tied with St. Stephens in fourth place, while South Caldwell was sixth. Hibriten was seventh with 135.
