Pioneers outlast Ashe County

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

WEST JEFFERSON — Watauga’s boys’ basketball team broke open a close game in the fourth quarter and claimed a 43-32 victory over Ashe Wednesday night.

The Pioneers led 28-27 going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Huskies 15-5 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Watauga gradually took a 34-29 lead in the fourth before going on a brief 6-0 mini-burst, and led 40-29 with 1:10 left in the game.

Watauga struggled early against the Huskies. Watauga was playing its second game in as many nights, and its third game in six days. Watauga’s previous two games went into overtime, including a 74-72 loss to powerful Hickory Tuesday night.

Tyler Sturgill came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down six rebounds. DeWayne Mackey added 11 points and handed out five assists. He also had three steals.

Cam Baker scored just five points, but pulled down six boards.

Jordan Spell scored eight points, six on two 3-point baskets. Matthew Lee and Cullen Ashley each scored six points for the Huskies.

Watauga returns to the court Friday at Northwestern Conference rival Alexander Central.
