Pioneers nearly sweep swimming championships

by Staff Reports

HICKORY — Watauga’s swim team came within three points of sweeping the Northwestern Conference league championships Wednesday at the Hickory YMCA.

Watauga’s boys’ captured the NWC crown by scoring 302 points. St. Stephens was second with 294, while defending champion South Caldwell finished in a tie with Hickory for third with 246.

Watauga’s girls’ team narrowly finished second to St. Stephens. Watauga finished with 310 points, three short of St. Stephens, which had 313.

South Caldwell was third with 270 and Fred T. Foard was fourth with 270.

“While we had hoped for two victories, I could not be more proud of each team,” Watauga coach David Gragg said. “Going into the season, I thought the men would have a much stronger chance of winning than the women. I knew how we had performed at the past few conference meets, but the ladies completely stepped it up this year and made a strong run at winning. I know they were disappointed, but it all came down to a few finishes here and there that determined who won. The breaks went our way in a few events and fell against us in others."

Watauga’s boys’ team did not win any individual events, but won the 400-freestyle relay race. The team of Forrest Brown, Noah Allain, Brandon Michelsen and Marcus Funston won the event with a time of 3:39.00.

Although Watauga did not win any individual events, the Pioneers made up for it by scoring points with depth in the events. Brown got the Pioneers going by finishing second in the 200-individual medley, while Josh Herman was fifth in the event.

Funston was second in the 100-butterfly, while Allain was fifth. Brown was third in the backstroke, Josh Herman was fourth in the 100-breaststoke and Joel Brown was sixth in that event.

Watauga’s medley relay team of Forest Brown, Herman, Funston and Allain was third, while the team of Joel Brown, Ben Watson, Herman and Michelsen was fifth in the 200-relay. Michelsen was fifth in the 100-freestyle, and Watson was fifth in the 500-freestyle.

The St. Stephens girls’ team needed a conference record in the 400-freestyle relay to hold off Watauga. The Indians finished with a time of 3:54.95, which edged out Watauga’s time of 3:56.05. Watauga’s team was comprised of Darby Middlebrook, Carson Middlebrook, Julianna Silver and Anne Taylor.

The Pioneers’ 200-rela made up of Kosmala, Silver, Maddy Allain and Dakota Wilson finished second to South Caldwell with a time of 1:49.84.

Watauga’s medley relay team made up of Doria Kosmala, Carson Middlebrook, Taylor and Darby Middlebrook set a conference record with a time of 2:01.01.

Darby Middlebrook added a victory in the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:03.10. Middlebrook added a second-place finish in the 500-freestyle.

Taylor added a victory in the 50-freestyle with a time of 26.24. She also won the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.49.

Carson Middlebrook finished second in the 100-breaststroke, while Silver finished third. Middlebrook was second in the 200-individual medley.

Kosmala added a fourth-place finish in the 100-backstroke, while Tori Placentra was sixth. Dakota Wilson was sixth in the 50-freestyle, and Silver was sixth in the 200-freestyle.
