Pioneers fall twice in Saturday trimatch

Watauga’s volleyball team fell twice in a trimatch played at Northwest Guilford Saturday.
The Pioneers lost 3-0 to Chapel Hill, falling 25-19, 25-17, 25-19. Another loss followed to host Northwest Guilford 25-18, 25-13, 26-24.
Channing Hagaman had eight kills and seven digs in the loss to Chapel Hill, Rebecca Hayes added five kills and three blocks, while Meredith Farthing had three kills and three blocks. Sarah Combs dished out 17 assists.
The numbers were similar in the loss to Northwest Guilford. Hayes finished with 11 kills, while Hagaman had eight kills and 13 digs defensively. Sydney Farthing added nine digs for the Pioneers, who close out Northwestern Conference play Monday at home against Hibriten.
Watauga beat South Caldwell Thursday in NWC play. The Pioneers took a 25-15, 20-25, 27-25, 25-21 victory over the Spartans.
Hagaman had 21 kills and 22 digs. Hayes added 15 kills, eight blocks and four serving aces. Ashlyn Van Dyke had 20 digs.
The first round of the playoffs begin Oct. 20.
Watauga’s junior varsity team also beat South Caldwell 26-24, 25-8.
Abby Hicks had 15 assists and five serving aces. Kinley McCourty finished with seven kills, and Arley Rodriguez finished with five kills.
