Pioneers end two-match losing streak

Watauga's volleyball team stopped a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Northwestern Conference rival Freedom Wednesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Pioneers (4-2, 1-1 NWC) beat Freedom 25-12, 25-16 and 25-6 mostly by getting the ball over the net and then getting the Patriots to make mistakes. That proved to be most effective in the final set when Freedom could return just two of freshman Brynne Gould's 10 serves in a 10-0 Pioneers run.
Gould finished with six serving aces in the third game.
"The third game was the best of the three sets," Watauga coach Kris Hagaman said.
Rebecca Hayes finished with 10 kills for the Pioneers. Meredith Farthing had seven and Sierra Hill added five.
Watauga won the first set by scoring the last nine points, all served up by Abby Hicks.
Freedom actually held an 11-9 lead in the second game before Watauga rallied to go up 24-13. Freedom added a couple of points before serving the ball long to give Watauga the victory in the set.
Watauga plays at Fred T. Foard on Thursday.
Watauga's junior varsity beat Freedom 25-6 and 25-16 Wednesday before the varsity match.
Taylor McCune had three kills and Savanna Rusher had 12 assists for the Pioneers.
