Pioneers cruise past St. Stephens

by Staff Reports

Change turned out to be good for Watauga's baseball team Tuesday.

Pioneers coach Pete Hardee made a few adjustments in the team's batting order in Watauga's 7-3 victory over visiting St. Stephens.

Watauga is 6-0 against the Indians since 2010.

Hardee swapped Carson Isaacs and Utah Jones in the order. Isaacs moved from the second spot to the third, and Jones moved up to the second position.

Isaacs, who is batting .462, responded by going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI.

Other Pioneers added to the offense, which scored four-run, fourth inning. Clay Mizner had an RBI single, while Jesse Illich had an RBI triple in the inning.

Adam Greene added a sacrifice fly to put the Pioneers in front 4-2. A walk with the bases loaded to Hunter Isaacs put the Pioneers in front 5-2.

Jones did his biggest damage on the mound for Watauga. He struck out three and allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 innings work.

Matt Lambert started on the mound for the Pioneers. He allowed one earned run, two hits, but walked five.

Isaacs was supposed to be the starting pitcher Tuesday, but he is nursing a pulled pectoral muscle. Hardee did not know how many starts Isaacs would miss.

Watauga will stat Illich on the mound Friday at Fred T. Foard.

St. Stephens was held to four hits, three by Fisher Davis. He had two doubles, an RBI and scored a run.

Josh Hughes took the loss for St. Stephens. He gave up six runs -- five earned. Watauga collected eight hits and three walks off Hughes.
