Pioneers blast North Surry

by Staff Reports

SPARTA — Watauga’s boys’ basketball team cruised past North Surry 75-50 in the first round of the Alleghany Christmas Tournament.

It was the first game the Pioneers have played in 13 days. The Pioneers (5-2) got 24 points from Cameron Baker and 16 from Ben Margolis, including four 3-point baskets in the third quarter.

It’s been a while since the Pioneers took to the court. Watauga had its games against Fred T. Foard and West Caldwell postponed because of the passing of Watauga coach and teacher Leigh Wallace.

Watauga went on a 16-5 run to take a 30-14 lead in the second quarter. The Pioneers scored 24 points in the second period and led 35-26 by halftime. Watauga outscored the Greyhounds 24-13 in the third quarter, and 40-24 in the second half to pull away.

Baker grabbed 12 rebounds, five steals and dished out three assists for the Pioneers. Ben Howser scored 10 points and grabbed four steals, while DeWayne Mackey and Allan Koppenhaver each scored 10 points. Mackey dished out four assists and pulled down six rebounds.

North Surry got 19 points from Grayson Vernon and eight from Marcus Sawyer.

Watauga was supposed to play the Raleigh Heat, a home-school team that is a 1-A program, but the Heat cose to play in the City of Durham Holiday Classic instead. Watauga’s next game is at home Friday against Hickory.
