Pioneers beat 7-2 in girls' tennis

Watauga’s girls’ tennis team claimed a 7-2 victory over visiting Ashe County in a nonconference victory Monday. The Pioneers improved to 5-0 this season.
Watauga won all six of its singles matches in straight sets. No. 1 seeded Meredith Smith swept past Anna Wooten 6-0, 6-0, while No. 3 seeded Nicole Fox and No. 4 seeded Emily Burwell both won by 6-0, 6-1 scores.
No. 2 seeded Hannah Petersen beat Haley Maloney 6-3, 6-1. Kelsi Kanoy beat Mary Austin Tugman 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and Anna Davidson took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hallie Brown at No. 6 singles.
None of the singles players played doubles for the Pioneers. Watauga’s No. 2 team of Gab Neufeld and Taylor Paige beat Kasey Curcio and Mary Austin Tugman 8-4. Wooten teamed with Maloney at No. 1 doubles to beat Ali Maupin and Savannah Copeland 8-0, while Maggie Witherspoon and Brown beat Kylie Winkelmann and Jessica Benyon 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Watauga plays at Wilkes Central on Wednesday.
GIRLS’ GOLF
BANNER ELK — Watauga’s girls’ golf team beat Avery in a dual tournament played at Grandfather Golf and Country Club. The three lowest scores from each team in the nine-hole match were used to determine the team winner.
Watauga finished with a 149 compared to a 162 for Avery. Watauga’s Savanna Wood was the medalist with a low score of 38.
Watauga’s Mary Seramur was second for the Pioneers with a 54. Tasha Wilson was third with a 57 and Rebekah Shoemake was fourth with a 60.
Avery got a team best 53 from Kristen Burleson and a 54 to Paige Church.
