Pierson named All-SoCon

Appalachian State second baseman Michael Pierson was named All-Southern Conference by the league's coaches and the league's media Monday.
Pierson was named to the media's first team and to the coaches' second team. He led the Mountaineers in hitting with a .335 average in 51 games played. Pierson also hit six home runs, 14 doubles and drove in 32 runs.
The leagues coaches also named shortstop Dillon Dobson to its first team. Dobson led the Mountaineers with 11 home runs and with 38 RBIs. Dobson hit .299 in 44 games played.
Appalachian State's Matt Brill, Tyler Stroup and Dallas DeVrieze were also named to the All-Freshman team by the coaches.
Brill, who turned down a contract from the New York Mets to play at App State, hit .311 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games. Stroup hit .280 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and seven doubles.
DeVrieze went 1-3 with an ERA mostly in a relief role for the Mountaineers' pitching staff. He struck out 16 and gave up 39 hits in 19 games.
