Parkway tops Hardin Park in girls' basketball final

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Parkway's girls' athletic department is not used to losing this year.

The Patriots went undefeated in middle school volleyball in the fall, and ran the table again during the regular season of the basketball. Perennial girls' basketball power Hardin Park stood Parkway's path to an undefeated season and a middle school tournament championship at Lentz-Eggers Gym Monday.

Parkway eliminated any chance of an upset loss by taking an early lead in its 30-20 victory. The Patriots finished the season with a 17-0 record.

Combined with its perfect season with the volleyball team, which had several players who also played basketball on its roster, the two Parkway programs combined to finish 34-0.

Parkway's boys' team last season also finished 17-0.

Hardin Park, which finished second in the regular season, ended its season with a 13-4 record.

“It's great because I was an assistant to the volleyball team to Susan Miller,” Parkway head basketball coach Stephen Schmal said. “I hate to see these girls go on, but I know they're going to do some big things when they go on to high school. They wanted it for our school.”

Parkway, using full-court pressure that bothered Hardin Park, climbed out to a 17-8 halftime lead and was never in any serious danger of losing the game. The Patriots benefitted by making 10-of-15 shots from the foul line, while Hardin Park missed all four of its attempts.

Parkway also shot a little better from the field, making 10-of-32 attempts. Hardin Park was 10-of-41 field goal attempts.

“We have a philosophy of defense,” Schmal said. “We play hard-nosed defense and we win championships with defense. These girls bought into it early in the season and they know if we play defense, we'll get steals in transition and we'll score.”

Parkway used a balanced offense to pull away from the Eagles. Mary Seramur, Sydney Farthing and Tristin Derrick each scored eight points for the Patriots.

Callie Idol added four points and Alexis Villarosa scored two.

Hardin Park countered with Tymber Wilson's six points and Mac Utter's four points. Alina Kosmala, Katherine Stapelton, Alli Brown, Katie Harrelson and Maggie Harrelson each scored two points for the Eagles.

Seramur did most of the damage in the first quarter by scoring six of the Patriots' seven points. Hardin Park closed to 7-6, but Parkway closed out the first half with a 10-2 run and led 17-8.

“My starters have been on the team for two years,” Schmal said. “They were on the volleyball team and they're just a great group of athletes. They keep wanting to learn and to work hard.”

Hardin Park outscored Parkway 6-4 to pull to 21-14, but Hardin Park could not get closer than six points — that being 24-18 with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter — the rest of the game.
