Notebook: WHS boys' soccer rips McDowell

MARION -- Watauga's boys' soccer team, led by three goals scored by Tucker Chasteen, rolled past McDowell for an 8-1 victory Wednesday night.
Watauga (2-0) got single goals from five other players. Hunter Martin went first with an unassisted goal eight minutes into the first half. Chasteen followed with his first seven minutes later to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead
Justin Hall, Canyon Mueller, Raul Fornoni and Josh Lampkins each added goals for the Pioneers, who led 4-0 by halftime. Patrick Williamson, Logan Raichle, Jake Chasteen and Vincente Montelongo each dished out assists.
Watauga's junior varsity claimed a 2-0 victory over McDowell, also on Wednesday night. David King and Zach Valet each scored goals for the Pioneers.
Sam Marlett picked up an assist on King's goal, which was scored with 25 minutes left in the second half. Powell Glidewell assisted on Valet's goal.
Watauga plays at Avery on Friday night. It will be varsity only, and it will start at 6 p.m.
NEWLAND -- Watauga survived a four-game match to beat North Surry 3-1 Tuesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The Pioneers won the first game 25-23, but lost the second 23-25. The Pioneers went on to win the next two games 28-26 and 25-23.
Meredith Farthing and Rebecca Hayes each had 13 kills. Farthing added 14 digs defensively and three blocks.
Hayes also had four blocks.
Offensively, Sierra Hill and Sarah Peterson each had seven kills, while Sarah Combs dished out 43 assists. Combs served four aces, while Sydney Farthing added three aces.
Defensively, Sydney Farthing had 20 digs.
