Notebook: Hickory QB transfers to Foard

by Staff Reports

Fred T. Foard already has a new coach who came from Hickory High School. Now the Tigers have the Red Tornadoes' quarterback.
Hickory quarterback Matt Williams has enrolled at Foard High School after his family moved into the Foard school district, according to the Hickory Daily Record.
Williams completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 1,588 yards and 12 touchdowns. Hickory went 8-5 overall last year, 4-2 in the Northwestern Conference, including a victory over Watauga.
Those numbers were much higher than the combination of Foard's sophomore quarterbacks Jacob Schmidt and Jackson Bass compiled in 2012. The pair threw for 617 yards and five touchdowns during the Tigers' 2-8 season under coach Jason Phelps.
Hickory beat Foard 63-0 in the Red Tornadoes' final game of the regular season. Williams completed 14-of-18 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns in that game, according to the Daily Record.
Williams' transfer leaves Hickory without an experienced quarterback. Ben Ansley completed one pass for 10 yards for the Red Tornadoes, while Raheim Connelly, a senior last season who has graduated, completed three passes.

Appalachian State's women's golfer Haley Zagoria was one of 10 golfers to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championships after shooting a 72 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Cougar Point on July 1.
A rising junior, Zagoria completed the event with an even-par score to earn a number five spot in the field of 102 golfers in the first of 18 qualifying events that will be held across the nation.
