Mountaineers hold off Wofford 50-49

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Appalachian State forward Tevin Baskin arguably made the two biggest plays in the Mountaineers' 50-49 victory over Wofford Tuesday night.


Baskin scored a basket with 2:32 left in the game to give the Mountaineers a 50-49 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the game. Baskin finished with 10 points, which led the team in scoring. Nate Healy also finished with 10 points.


Baskin also blocked a Justin Gordon shot with four seconds left to preserve the victory. The Mountaineers (5-8, 1-1 SoCon) held Wofford (6-9, 0-2) to 36.2 percent shooting for the game, 29.6 in the second half.


Spencer Collins led the Terriers in scoring with 13 points. Lee Skinner added 10 points, mostly by making 6-of-8 shots from the foul line. Karl Cochran, who went into the game averaging over 16 points per game, settled for nine against the Mountaineers on 4-of-14 shooting.


Appalachian State did not especially shoot all that well either. The Mountaineers shot 35.1 percent from the field, making 20-of-57.


Mike Neal and Jay Canty each scored eight points.


Both teams took their biggest leads in the second half. Appalachian State went on a 9-2 run to start the second half, which gave the Mountaineers a 36-27 lead with 16:57 left in the game.

Wofford rallied by taking a 47-40 lead with 8:29 left in the second half. The Mountaineers overtook the Terriers with a 10-3 run capped by Baskin's final layup.


Appalachian State hosts North Division rival Elon at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
