Mountaineers dump The Citadel

by Staff Reports

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- There was a time, not so long ago, when Appalachian State had trouble beating a Division I program.

After the Mountaineers cruised to an 80-67 win over The Citadel and McAlister Field House Thursday night, they are on the verge of putting together a winning streak.

It's a small streak, but it's already begun. Appalachian State (6-13, 2-4 SoCon) made it two straight victories in overall games, games over Division I programs and Southern Conference teams. The Mountaineers beat Georgia Southern on Tuesday night.

Appalachian State shot 55.7 percent from the field the entire game, and 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the second half. The Mountaineers also outscored The Citadel's bench 30-0.

They can thanks Mike Kobani and Frank Eaves for that. Kobani scored 18 points after making 9-of-10 shots from the field in just 24 minutes of playing time. He added a blocked shot and three rebounds.

App State outscored The Citadel 42-24 inside the paint, and 10-4 on second-chance shots.

Eaves made 5-of-6 shots, including both of his 3-point attempts, and finished with 12 points.

Tab Hamilton added 18 points and Mike Neal scored 13 for the Mountaineers.

The Citadel (4-17, 0-6) countered with 24 points from Matt Van Scyoc. He also finished with five rebounds and made 8-of-9 of his foul shots.

The Bulldogs held a significant edge in foul shooting. The Citadel made 17-of-23 foul shots compared to just 5-of-8 by the Mountaineers.

But Appalachian State compensated by taking 14 more shots from the field and by making 12 more shots from the field. The Mountaineers made 34-of-61 shots compared to 22-of-46 by The Citadel.

App State led 40-32 by halftime, made the first basket of the second half, and never let the Bulldogs get closer than six points the rest of the game.

The Mountaineers won't play again until Jan. 30 when that play at UNC Greensboro.
