Mountaineers announce 2014 football schedule

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Appalachian State's football program was finally able to finalize its 2014 schedule after the Sun Belt Conference released its schedule.

The Mountaineers will play three of their first four games on the road, which includes their first Sun Belt game. The Mountaineers' first Sun Belt game will be at Georgia Southern, App State's longtime Southern Conference rival, on Sept. 27.

The Mountaineers, who have beaten the Eagles the last three season, hold a 16-12-1 overall edge in the series with Georgia Southern, and a 12-10 edge since 1993. App State also beat Georgia Southern in 2011 and 2012 when the Eagles were ranked No. 1 in the FCS polls.

Appalachian State's first home game against a Sun Belt team is Oct. 4 against South Alabama. Appalachian State also hosts Sun Belt games against Georgia State on Nov. 1, Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 8 and Idaho on Nov. 29.

Appalachian State also hosts Campbell in its first home game Sept. 6 and Liberty on Oct. 11, which gives the Mountaineers six home games.

App State also plays Sun Belt Conference games at Troy State on Oct. 18, at Arkansas State on Nov. 15 and at Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 22.

The Mountaineers open their season at Michigan on Aug. 30 in a rematch of their historical 2007 upset. App State beat Michigan, which was ranked No. 5 in the nation at the time, 34-32.

The win not only was the first time an FCS team beat a ranked FBS team, it also got the Mountaineers votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Appalachian State also starts its home-and-home series with Southern Mississippi with a road game with the Eagles on Sept. 20. The Eagles return the favor in 2015.
