Middlebrook adds indoor state championship

CHAPEL HILL — Watauga's Darby Middlebrook added another item to her already impressive resume by winning the 1,600-meter run at the state 4-A indoor track and field finals Saturday at Smith Fieldhouse on the University of North Carolina campus.

The Pioneers finished in fifth place in the team totals with 32 points, just five points shy of fourth-place Durham Jordan's 37 points. Raleigh Wakefield won with 88 points, while Greensboro Dudley was second with 43. Green Hope was third with 42.

Middlebrook helped Watauga take fifth overall at the event. She finished with a time of 5:02.72, which broke a state record. Middlebrook already has a state championship in cross country in 2010 and finished second in the state cross country championship in 2011.

Middlebrook added a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:10.70. Fellow Watauga runner Madison Harman was fourth in the event with a time of 11:20.56, giving the Pioneers five more team points.

Davie County's Anna McBride won the event with a time of 11:04.51.

Middlebrook was also part of a 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Julia Roberts, Hailey Middlebrook and Harman that also finished in second place despite breaking the state meet record. Watauga finished with a time of 9:27.79, which was second to Green Hope's time of 9:25.85.

Taylor Drummonds was eighth in the pole vault to close out the scoring for the Pioneers. Drummond's vaulted 9-feet, 6-inches.

 

BOYS RESULTS

Watauga's boys got a second-place finish from Reid Harris, and an eighth-place finish from Max Ruble in the pole vault. Harris cleared 14-6, while Ruble cleared 12-0.

Andrew Vandenberg finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run with a 9:57.61, and Bryan Brackney was eighth in the 1,000-meter run with a 2:38.59.

Overall, Watauga's boys' team finished in 16th place with 12 points. Southeast Guilford tied Knightdale for first place overall with 46 points each. Southeast Raleigh was third with 42 points and Raleigh Enloe was fourth with 36.
