McElfresh takes Price's spot on depth chart

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Appalachian State released its two-deep going into its season-opening game at Montana, which is Saturday in Missoula, Mont.

A major change is at wide receiver, where sophomore Simms McElfresh takes over the starting position for sophomore Sean Price.

Price, a preseason FCS All-American, was suspended Aug. 22 by head coach Scott Satterfield after Price was arrested for intoxication and being disorderly at a local bar on Aug. 17.

Backing up McElfresh is former Watauga standout Trey Kavanaugh, a sophomore who is also the grandson of former App State head coach Jerry Moore. The other starting wide receivers are sophomore Malachi Jones and seniors Andrew Peacock and Tony Washington.

Ricky Fergerson has won the starting job, at least on the depth chart, at running back. Freshman Marcus Cox and redshirt freshman Paul Magloire are the backups.

Another freshman, Kennan Gilchrist was moved up to second on the depth chart behind Michael Frazier at outside linebacker. Rashaad Townes and Lee Wright, both freshmen, are the top two players on the other outside linebacker.
