McDowell sweeps Watauga's varsity basketball teams

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

MARION — Watauga’s girls’ basketball team proved to be McDowell’s equal for a quarter. Then McDowell turned on its afterburners and Watauga was left behind.

McDowell actually turned up its defensive pressure in the third quarter and cruised to a 59-36 victory.

Watauga (3-1) fell behind in the first half, but not to the point that they had no chance of coming back. The Pioneers trailed 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and 36-28 by halftime.

McDowell’s defense changed that in the second half. The Titans held Watauga to seven points in the third quarter and just one point in the fourth.

The Pioneers were held to 36 points despite making five 3-point baskets. Clare Harris made four of them and finished with 12 points.

Danielle Welsh added nine points and Hannah Margolis added seven points for the Pioneers.

Kyler Lemon led all scorers with 18 points. Erin Mills added 13 points and Kassie Brackett scored 11, nine of them on three 3-point baskets, for the Titans. McDowell made seven baskets from beyond the 3-point arc.

Watauga takes on border rival Avery in a second showdown with the Vikings. Watauga won the first game 48-45 in a game that wasn’t decided until the final minute.

Margolis scored 14 points against Avery with help by hitting 8-of-11 from the foul line. Savanna Wood scored 11 in that game.
