McDowell sweeps Pioneers

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

For years, Watauga's girls' basketball team has tried to close the gap between itself and McDowell.

The Pioneers nearly did that Tuesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Watauga led by 11 at one point of the game, but could not hold that lead in the second half and fell 50-45. Watauga lost its third straight, but nearly broke its 30-game losing streak to the Titans. Watauga sprinted out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and 24-16 by halftime. The Pioneers re-established its 11-point lead when a Savanna Wood 3-point basket put them in front 31-20 early in the third quarter.

That's when Watauga's offense stopped scoring. The Pioneers missed on 10 straight possessions, which allowed McDowell to score the next 12 points and take a 32-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the game. Watauga pulled to within 46-44 with 1:27. Danielle Welsh hit a foul shot to close the gap to 46-45, but McDowell made 4-of-8 foul shots in the final minute, while Watauga missed the front end of two one-and-one foul shots.

Wood kept the Pioneers' offense moving with five 3-point baskets. She finished with 18 points.

Hannah Margolis added two 3-point baskets and finished with 16 points. Welsh added eight. Clare Harris had the final of Watauga's eight 3-point baskets.

Nicole Mills led a balanced McDowell attack with 15 points.

Watauga (5-2) got off to a 9-0 start, but struggled with turnovers later in the first quarter. Three Watauga turnovers led directly to eight McDowell points, which allowed the Titans to close to 14-12 by the end of the quarter. Watauga led 28-27 late in the second quarter, but McDowell scored the final five points of the half and took a 32-28 lead into halftime.

A Raekwon Miller 3-point basket gave the Titans a 44-34 lead with 3:37 left in the third period that Watauga never could overcome. The Pioneers closed to 36-32 in the fourth quarter, but drew no closer.

The Titans made nine 3-point baskets, led by Dylan Ricketts, who made four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points. Josh Pyatt added 14 points, while Miller scored 11. Dalonta Rodriguez added 10 points.
