McCray to play in Collegiate Bowl
by Staff Reports
Appalachian State cornerback Demetrius McCray has
accepted an invitation to participate in the 2013 National Football League
Players Association Collegiate Bowl, the NFLPA announced.
The second-annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be held on Jan. 19 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. ET.
McCray has also been invited to participate in the 2013 NFL Combine, which will be held next month in Indianapolis.
McCray became the first Mountaineer cornerback to ever lead the Southern Conference twice with his four interceptions in 2012, which tied him for the league lead. He grabbed five interceptions in 2011.
McCray finished his career with 10 interceptions, which was good for a tie for 10th among active NCAA Division I FCS players in 2012.
Additionally, the senior led Appalachian State with
eight passes defended, ranked sixth on the team with 55 tackles from his
cornerback position and forced a fumble.
He was a consensus first-team all-conference selection and earned second-team All-America recognition from the Associated Press. McCray was one of 20 finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the nation’s top FCS defensive player.
The 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl also includes a week of practices leading up to the game, which gives the players the opportunity to receive coaching from former NFL head coaches Dick Vermeil, the head coach of the National team, and Herm Edwards, the coach of the American team.
Both teams’ practices on Jan. 17 will be televised live on ESPNU at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.
