Matt Proffitt receives All-State honors

A three-year varsity starter for the Watauga High School Pioneers has been named to the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State Team.

The honor went to Matt Proffitt, who will attend Brevard College to play baseball in fall 2012. Brevard is a Division II school and a member of the South Atlantic Conference.

With the Pioneers, Proffitt batted .350 with a team-leading three home runs and 20 runs batted in. He also had four doubles and a triple among his 28 hits.

His 28 hits also tied him for second place with rising senior Tyler Jones. Ryan Turner, who will attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., this fall, led WHS with 29 hits.

With his pitching, Proffitt was also second on the team in appearances with eight, complete games (one) and victories (six).
Proffitt was also tied for the team lead in saves with two. He had a 3.57 earned run average. He gave up 23 earned runs in 45 2/3 innings with 62 strikeouts.

Proffitt, who shared Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Player of the Year honors with Davis Hanvey of Hickory and Garrison Franklin of South Caldwell, was the only player from the NW3A/4A named to the Class 4A All-State team.
