Martin's record attempt falls short

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Appalachian State punter Sam Martin is also the holder on the regular kicks for Drew Stewart, but he also handles the long field goal attempts.
Martin tried a 61-yard field goal attempt with just eight seconds left in the game, but it fell short of the uprights. The ball was returned, but Elon did not get it past the Mountaineers’ 40-yard line.
Mark Wright holds the ASU record for the longest field goal with a 57-yarder he made in 2000 against Troy State at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Appalachian State’s kickoff coverage team did not have to work as hard as it usually does since Martin belted all of his kickoffs – six in all – out of the end zone. Martin also averaged 43.5 yards on six punts, including a 50-yarder. Two were downed inside the 20-yard line.

Appalachian State beat Elon for the 16th straight time Saturday, and holds a 30-9-1 advantage. The last time the Phoenix beat the Mountaineers was 1964, a 28-7 win at Conrad Stadium. ASU’s previous two victories were by a combined seven points.
Since Appalachian State joined the Southern Conference in 2003, ASU has outscored the Phoenix 341-164, which works out to an average score of 38-18.

Appalachian State defensive end Deuce Robinson injured his knee and was helped off the field in the third quarter and did not return.

In other Southern Conference games, Wofford beat Furman 20-17, Georgia Southern beat Samford 35-16 and Chattanooga beat The Citadel 28-10.
