Mansure wins Caldwell County Invitational

LENOIR -- Watauga Katherine Mansure won the girls' event at the Caldwell County Invitational Wednesday at the Lenoir Aquatic Center track.

Mansure was one of four runners to finish in the Top 10. Shelby Hickernell finished fifth, Lily Weeks was eighth and Celia Jackson took 10th.

The Pioneers also won the team title with 68 points. Hickory was second with 111 points.

Watauga's boys finished in fourth place. Michael Holland was the lone Pioneer to finish in the Top 10 by taking fourth.

Fred T. Foard won with 124 points. Shelby was second and Alexander Central third.



Savanna Wood was the medalist in Watauga's dual match with Ashe on Tuesday at Boone Golf Club.

Wood, who has verbally committed to play golf at Appalachian State, shot a 1-under par 34 on the front nine. Watauga went on to beat Ashe in the team totals by shooting a combined 134. Ashe shot a combined 161

Watauga's Mary Seramur shot a nine-holes round of 48. Victoria Stapleton shot a round of 52, while Heather Ostwalt and Katie Alexander both shot a 58.

Ashe was led by Sarah Hardin, who shot a 48.Olivia Barr had a 54, while Savannah Brooks shot a 59. Mackenzie Shatley shot a 61 and Alexis Howell shot a 62.


Watauga boys' soccer player Tucker Chasteen was named Watauga's Athlete of the Week by the school's coaches and administration.

Chasteen, who has 12 goals in six games, scored six goals last week in Watauga's three victories. He had the second goal in Watauga's 2-0 victory over A.C. Reynolds, which went into that game unbeaten.

The award is sponsored by Five Guys Burgers and Fries.



Ashe's women's tennis team beat Elkin 5-4 Tuesday.

The match came down to the No. 2 doubles match between Ashe's Mary Austin Tugman and Grace Miller against Elkin's Makayla Dimmette and Ally Gentry. It took a tiebreaker, but Ashe's duo won the match 9-8 (7-5 tiebreaker).

Ashe also won four of the six singles matches. Hallie Brown shook off a slow start at the No. 1 seed, but rebounded to take a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Payton Nicholson.

Ashe's No. 2 singles player Maggie Witherspoon added a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Miracle Walters, and Miller followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dimmette.

Ashe's No. 5 singles player Kasey Curcio took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Julie Newmark. Tugman fell 6-3, 6-1 to Gentry at No. 4 singles, and Ella Copeland lost 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Emma Aldridge.
