Late Tuesday: WHS volleyball team breaks losing streak

HICKORY — Watauga’s volleyball team broke a five-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Hickory Tuesday night.

The Pioneers, who lost all five matches of their losing streak at home, beat the Tornadoes 27-29, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-7. The Pioneers won’t have to play again until they take to the road Saturday in a trimatch.

Watauga got 13 kills, seven blocks and six serving aces from Rebecca Hayes. Meredith Farthing added nine kills and Kristen Carter had 29 assists. She also had nine digs defensively.

Kiersten McClannon added 11 digs for the Pioneers.

Watauga’s junior varsity also beat Hickory 25-17, 28-30, 25-22. Sarah Combs dished out 20 assists and six serving aces for the Pioneers. Sarah Petersen had 11 kills, Abby Hicks had five serving aces and Makenzie Presnell had 11 digs defensively for the Pioneers.

 

HICKORY — Watauga’s girls’ tennis team stayed unbeaten Tuesday with a 5-4 victory over host Hickory.

The singles matches ended even at 3-3, meaning the team event would be decided in doubles. Watauga’s No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Fox and Meredith Smith cruised to a 10-4 victory over Erynn Hurst and Zoe Fisher. Watauga’s Hannah Petersen and Emily Burwell beat Madeline Finley and Julia Kessel 10-4.

Smith beat Hurst 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Petersen took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Finley, and Fox beat Zoe Fisher 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

The Pioneers improved to 14-0 overall, 5-0 in the NWC. They’ll play in the NWC tournament on Monday.
