Junior Legion team has five all-stars
by Staff Reports
Watauga's Junior American Legion baseball team had five players and its coach named to the Area IV East-West All-Star Game slated for July 21-22 in Marion.
Tyler Sturgill, Hunter Isaacs, Justin Greer, Jesse Illich and Carson Isaacs were named to the team. Sturgill and Hunter Isaacs will play in the game, while Greer, Illich and Carson Isaacs won't because of previous commitments.
Watauga coach Bradley Rudisill will also coach the West team. Watauga is coming off a 6-4 loss to South Caldwell in the first round of the Area IV playoffs, which gave South Caldwell a 2-0 sweep.
“I haven't been told a lot,” Rudisill said. “They called me the night we got knocked out.”
Rudisill gets no practice time with his team. He'll meet them July 21 and play that night at McDowell High School.
A second game will be played July 22 at the same site.
“They'll call back later when everything is finalized,” Rudisill said.
The West division of the Area IV region includes both South Caldwell teams, both Fred T. Foard teams, West Caldwell, Hibriten, Alexander Central and both McDowell teams.
The East team includes programs from Gastonia, Cherryville, Dallas, Monroe, Lincoln County, Mint Hill, Queen City, Shelby Kings Mountain, Rutherford, Lincolnton and Charlotte.
Rudisill may be without players whose teams are still in the Area IV playoffs. Both South Caldwell's teams reached the second round.
“It depends on if they're still playing,” he said. “That's the downside of them being good.”
