Holz earns women's soccer honor

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Appalachian State women's soccer player Julia Holz has been tabbed the Southern Conference Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 23-25.
Holz, a junior forward from Marietta, Ga., scored two goals two goals last week in games against East Tennessee State and Austin Peay. She currently leads the team with two goals and four points on the season. Holz scored the most goals in 2012 with eight, including three game-winning goals.
She scored in the eighth minute of the 2013 season Friday night on a beautiful through ball assist by Sam Neill. The goal gave the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead over ETSU they would never relinquish.
Holz also scored on Sunday afternoon against Austin Peay in the 54th minute on an assist by Jenna Caudle to close the gap to a one-goal deficit. App State fell 2-1, but Holz closed out both games totaling eight shots - four of them on target.
"Julia has really worked hard all summer to prepare for this season," App State head coach Sarah Strickland said. "She played so well this weekend along with the rest of our forwards and we are so proud to have her recognized and our team recognized with such a huge honor."
Holz was also selected as a Player of the Week honoree in 2012. Holz and the rest of the Mountaineers will be back in action on Friday when they take part in the Colorado College Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a match against host Colorado College at 6 p.m. (EST).
Also nominated were Nicole Dennion (Elon), Jamie Simmons (UNCG), Malcanisha Kelley (Samford), Kelly Pannell (Western Carolina) and Kimberly Cohn (Wofford).
