Holmes earns SoCon honor

by Staff Reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Appalachian State designated hitter Noah Holmes has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, while Citadel right-hander Austin Pritcher has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games May 6-12.

The selections are made by the league office.

Holmes hit .462 with two home runs and a double in the Mountaineers' series win over West Coast Conference regular-season champion Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash., over the weekend. He drove in five runs and scored three in the series.

The Rockwell junior was 1-for-4 in a series-opening 4-0 loss on Saturday, but he was 3-for-4 with a walk, a solo homer and two runs scored as Appalachian State bounced back to win game two of the doubleheader, 6-2.

Holmes was 2-for-5 with a homer and a double as the Mountaineers claimed a 13-3 win in the rubber game on Sunday. Holmes drove in four runs in the win, tying his career best, and scored one.

Appalachian State will face No. 3 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday before closing the regular season with a home series against SoCon regular-season champion Western Carolina, starting Thursday.

Other top hitters included: Blake Butler (College of Charleston), Bailey Rush (The Citadel), David Daniels (Davidson), Ryan Kinsella (Elon), Taylor Johnson (Furman), Ben Morgan (Georgia Southern), Christiaan Durdaller (Samford), Tyler White (Western Carolina) and James Plaisted (Wofford).

Pritcher earned his second weekly award of the season after hurling a complete game against The Citadel's crosstown rival College of Charleston on Friday.

The Charleston, S.C., senior held the Cougars to just one run on six hits in a 7-1 Bulldog win, striking out four and walking one. After allowing CofC's lone run in the second inning, Pritcher blanked the Cougars over the final seven frames.

The complete game was the second in the last three weeks for Pritcher, who was also the league's player of the week on April 29 and pitcher of the month for February and April.

The Citadel, currently second in the SoCon standings, will try to lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship when it closes the regular season with a three-game set at UNCG starting Thursday.

Other top pitchers included: Taylor Thurber (Appalachian State), Matt Pegler (College of Charleston), Matt Saeta (Davidson), Sam Howard (Georgia Southern), Cole Limbaugh (Samford), Jeremy Null (Western Carolina) and Jesse Morris (Wofford).
