Hickory's girls cruise past Watauga

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

HICKORY — When Hickory’s girls’ basketball team, it strikes quickly. Watauga found that out.

Hickory pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to a 64-37 victory over the visiting Pioneers. It took a while for the Red Tornadoes to pull away from Watauga. When they did, they left little chance for Watauga to recover.

Hickory held a 29-23 lead with 1:50 left in the second quarter, but Watauga’s fortune would not last. Hickory closed out the half with a 10-0 run that gave the Red Tornadoes a 39-23 advantage.

“You can’t give up runs like that,” Pioneers coach Klay Anderson said. “In that final minute, it seemed we turn the ball over four or five times and they got four or five layups and you can’t get down like that.”

Hickory followed with a 13-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter. Watauga turned the ball over 11 times in the third quarter, and the Pioneers shot 2-of-8 from the field.

Hickory outscored Watauga 25-14 in the second half.

“When you turn the basketball over against a team that thrives on layups — I don’t think they’re a great half-court offensive team,” Anderson said. “When they make their threes, they’re good in the half court. Overall, they are much more comfortable on the run. When you let them have run-outs, you can’t defend them.”

The Red Tornadoes took a 7-0 lead before Savanna Wood hit a basket with 3:50 left in the first quarter. Hickory held a 25-13 lead in the second quarter, but the Pioneers went on a 10-4 run sparked by two 3-point shots by Wood and a basket by Hannah Margolis to close to 29-23.

Wood, with help from three 3-point baskets, led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 points. Margolis and Caitlin Westphal each added five points.

Hickory’s Yazman Hannah led all scorers with 21 points. Danaisa Witherspoon added 18 points and Erika Troutman scored 12. Hickory’s Alex Wright made three of the Red Tornadoes’ five 3-point shots to finish with nine points.
