The merry-go-round of football coaches made another stop Wednesday in Hickory.
Mike Helms, the former football coach at Freedom, was named head coach at Hickory High School. The Hickory Public Schools approved his teaching contract, according to the Hickory Daily Record.
Hickory High School also announced that assistant principal Susan Carolina Lovette will serve as the institutions athletic director.
Both Helms and Lovette replace Tom Harper, who served in both positions in 2011-12. Harper left Alexander Central to take over at Hickory, but resigned at Hickory to be the new football coach at Fred T. Foard. Harper took over the Foard program from Jason Phelps.
Hickory was 8-5 overall, 4-2 in the Northwestern Conference under Harper. Foard was 2-8 last season, 0-6 in the NWC
Helms, who is married to Hickory girls' basketball coach Barbara Helms, was the head coach at Freedom for four seasons. He guided the Patriots to an overall record of 37-14, and led Freedom to three straight 10-win seasons.
He also has been the head coach at East Burke, Cherryville, West Charlotte and Northwest Cabarrus from 1997-2008. His overall record is 103-81.
Lovette, an Appalachian State graduate, was a former girls' basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Alexander Central.
