Hickory girls' team blasts Watauga

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Once Hickory's girls' basketball team got on a roll, there was next to nothing Watauga could do to stop it.

The Pioneers stayed reasonably close to Hickory for a quarter, but the Red Tornadoes turn on their afterburners in the second quarter and cruised to an 81-38 victory at Lentz-Eggers Gym Friday.

There was a time early in the second quarter when Watauga trailed Hickory 18-13. Kaelin McNeil scored Watauga's first four points of the second quarter, which left them trailing by five.

It wouldn't take the Red Tornadoes long to shatter Watauga's chances of winning. After Hickory turned up its defensive pressure, the Red Tornadoes went on a 14-0 run and took a 32-13 lead that the Pioneers would not challenge.

Hickory's defense forced 30 Watauga turnovers.

Hickory's Yazmen Hannah led all scorers with 23 points. Danasia Witherspoon and Farrah Young each scored 18 points, which were more than Watauga's leading scorer.

Hannah Margolis led the Pioneers with 12 points and Savanna Wood added 11 points. Margolis also pulled down nine rebounds.

Hickory jumped out to a 7-0 lead before a Wood 3-pointer with 5:45 left in the first quarter provided the Pioneers their first points of the game. Hickory took a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Watauga plays its next six games on the road beginning Tuesday at Wilkes Central. The Pioneers play at Ashe County the next night.
