Hardin Park's teams advance in tournament

Hardin Park's Middle School's boys' basketball team looked like it was attacking in platoons in its 48-16 victory in the opening round of the middle school basketball tournament Thursday.
Hardin Park (14-1), the No. 1-seeded team in the tournament, opened up a 12-0 lead before Cove Creek (0-15) got a basket from Deandre Currence with 3:32 left in the first quarter. Hardin Park used its full-court press to come up with seven steals that led directly to Eagles baskets in the first quarter.
Hardin Park claimed a 20-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles did not let up in the second quarter by outscoring Cove Creek 12-3 in the second quarter to claim a comfortable 32-8 halftime lead.
Hayes Henderson led Hardin Park in scoring with 11 points. Henderson scored five baskets from the field and 1-of-2 from the foul line.
Eli Stroud added 10 points on five field goals, and David Gailes added eight points on four shots made from the field.
Braxton Moffitt scored six points and Parker Morgan added five points for Hardin Park.
Vincent Saufley scored nine points on three 3-point baskets for Cove Creek. Currence scored five points and Mason Smith scored two for the Raiders.
In other boys' games, No. 2 Parkway beat No. 7 Blowing Rock 48-20, No. 3 Mabel beat No. 6 Bethel 50-33 and No. 4 Green Valley beat No. 5 Valle Crucis 43-36.
Hardin Park plays Green Valley, and Parkway plays Mabel.

Top-seeded Hardin Park took a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back in its 37-6 victory over Valle Crucis in the first round of the girls' middle school basketball tournament Thursday.
Valle Crucis (2-13) scored just two points in each of the remaining three quarters. Hardin Park (15-0) led 17-2 at halftime and 27-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Maddie Darner led Hardin Park in scoring with 10 points. Darner made three shots from the field and all four of her foul shots.
Kaylee Cottom added nine points after making three shots from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line. Makenzie Robinson scored five points, including the game's lone 3-point shot.
Anna Shellman scored four points, while Linnea Min and Allie Jones each scored two for Hardin Park.
Valle Crucis got five points from Jada Wilson and one point from Kloee Sawyer.
In other girls' games, No. 2 Blowing Rock beat No. 7 Mabel 27-17, No. 3 Bethel beat No. 6 Cove Creek 27-16 and No. 4 Green Valley beat No. 5 Parkway 32-24.
Hardin Park plays Green Valley, and Blowing Rock plays Bethel.
