SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After a record-breaking performance at the Raleigh Relays over the weekend, Appalachian State senior runner Amanda Hamilton was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday.
Hamilton, who finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run at N.C. State last Friday with a time of 34:52.76, broke the previous Appalachian State record set by Whitney Ball in 1989.
The Cary native currently leads the SoCon in the 10,000-meters and her mark of 17:11.01 in the 5,000 meters at the Wake Forest Open on March 15th is the fourth-best time in the league this year.
A health care management major, Hamilton currently holds a 3.8 grade-point average. She is the fifth Mountaineer to earn Student-Athlete of the week honors this season.
Appalachian's other honorees include Stanley Broaden (men's track and field), Courtney Freeman (women's basketball), Nathan Healy (men's basketball) and Jamie Nunn (baseball).
